Why are we so curious
about Dream Interpretation and the Meaning of Dreams?
Dream life, indeed sleep
life altogether, is still an unsolved problem, and when the
coincidences of events as between dreaming and waking are
taken into account it is natural that people wish to learn
more about dream interpretation. Realistic dreams sometime
appear to convey information, or a warning, in reference to
the future and this is one of the major reasons why we want
to learn about Dream Interpretation and the meaning of
dreams.
The History and Origins of Dream Interpretation
Early man, with sufficient
intelligence to remember his dreams, and ponder over them
fearfully, was, in his ignorance, persuaded they conveyed
serious messages to him, messages in which the more clever
men of the group saw an opening for personal ascendancy by
devising a system of interpretation, and therefore assuming a
position of importance and leadership in the tribe. It was
logical that these early leaders would formulate a skilful
list of the meanings of dreams and dream interpretation.
Priests, of early Pagan religions followed by the Egyptians,
Greeks and Romans, acted as dream interpreters and experts
in interpretation.
Christian Dream
Interpretation & Biblical Dream Interpretation - Christian
Dream Symbols
Dream Interpretation has
considerable credibility with many people due to the
recognition given to this subject by Christian Dream
Interpretation and Biblical Dream Interpretation. We may, of
course, have our own interpretation of such phenomena, but
the wide stretch of centuries covered by these facts is not
without significance, showing as it does the strong and
tenacious grip which dream interpretation and Christian
Dream Symbols had upon the race.
In all Christian countries there is a solid reason for
accepting information conveyed in dreams, inasmuch as the
sacred narratives in the Bible speak of Divine guidance by
this means. God declared that He would speak through dreams
and visions in the Old Testament.
"Hear now my words: If there be a
prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto
him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream" (Num.
12:6).
There are about 121 mentions of dreams
in the Bible. Joseph and Daniel are recorded as having
interpreted dreams sent from God, and the Bible describes
many incidents of dreams as divine revelation. An example of
a Biblical dream is told in which Jacob sees a ladder to
heaven. This section includes a Christian Dream Symbols in
which Christian and Biblical symbols are detailed for
interpretation.
Dream Interpretation -
Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung
Dream interpretation was
taken up as part of psychoanalysis at the end of the 19th
century the most famous book on the subject is 'The
Interpretation of Dreams' by Sigmund Freud in which the
content of a dream is analyzed to reveal its latent meaning
to the psyche of the dreamer. In 1934 a book by Carl Jung
was published called "The Practical Use of Dream-analysis"
suggesting it should be used in Psychotherapy. Jung believed
that dreams contained various elements such as illusions,
wild fantasies, memories, plans, irrational experiences and
even telepathic visions.
