Check out our article on Sleep Tests. This Sleeping disorder is diagnosed with an overnight sleep test called a polysomnogram, or a "sleep study". Clinically significant levels of sleep apnea are defined as five or more episodes per hour of any type of apnea registered from the polysomnogram. A polysomnogram sleep study will typically record a minimum of 11 channels requiring a minimum of 22 wire attachments to the patient. Electrodes are attached to the chin, the scalp and the outer edge of the eyelids. Monitors attached to the chest record the heart rate and breathing. The standard definition of any apneic event includes a minimum 10 second interval between breaths.
